An update

I have fallen off the bandwagon already so here is a catch up of whats been happening.
Since my last update loads has been done and it is actually statrting to look like an allotment rather than an overgrown field.

So here is the piccies first and I will update as we go
The husband earning his keep and digging the first of our plots

This pampas grass is the bain of my life, I hate it so much. The husband says to just leave it but I cant so I have a hack at it everytime we go down and lose a bit more off it.
One nicely dug plot ready for potatoes and onions

This is going to be Olivias plot but as you will see further down the page there is an enormous pile of compost in the corner so she will be getting a slightly smaller plot

Under the bucket is the rhubarb

Poo!  and two dug plots now.  This smaller one is going to be for more "summery" stuff like lettuce, peas radish, peppers etc etc

Plot 3 :)

just behind the fire is going to be the fruit plot, there are lots of fruit bushes dotted about so I am going to fence them in some way and give them their own patch

So it really is coming along fantastically now and you can tell its an allotment rather than an overgrown mess.  Still need to get the car down and get rid of the rubbish, we desperately need a shed as there is no water supply so we need to set up water butts and we need/want timber to make the beds raised.
Nearly every windowsill in the house is covered in seed trays which are all now sprouting (which makes me a bit excited)

And finaly, the allotments are surrounded by fields and we never usually see a soul, but yesterday we had some new neighbours, very very cute and it certainly feels like spring is springing!!

Wednesday 9th March

This morning it has snowed, hail stoned and rained so I have decided to stay at home and paint the sitting room instead!!

Tuesday 8th March

After dropping the kids off at school I go to the local hardware shop and buy a rake and a spade and secretly eye up all the other gardening tools but not having a clue what they are for or how to use them.
Go home, get changed into my now allocated "allotment" clothes, pick up my shiny new tools and head off on the lovely walk to the allotment.  Its only a 5 min walk but it is very very pretty, cant wait for summer, its going to be beautiful.
So after two hours I have managed to make a pile of the rubbish that will have to go to the skip and I have semi cleared two patches and have a pile to burn.  couldnt set fire to them today as it was rather windy so shall see how it is tomorrow.  I have moved the black tarpaulin stuff to the very back and weighed it down incase I need it for something else.
There is bramble bushes that are growing along the ground (and which trip me up everytime I pass them, you would think I would remember) so I need to get rid of those but need some shears or something.
So after a lovely two hours I admit defeat and head home feeling quite pleased with how much I have done.
Anyone passing now would look at it and see it is a job in progress rather than an overgrown mess, although there is still a long way to go.
The husband hasnt been too great today so didnt come but am hoping he will come down with me tomorrow and we can make another dent in it.

Monday 7th March

Today I buy new gardening gloves for us.  For myself and the smallest child, we have gone pink and purple spots, The husband has tough industrial gloves.  I am also given a gardening fork, I am beyond excited, what has happened to me???
Due to other things, I have had no time to go down today, tomorrow is when the fun begins.

Sunday 6th March

Today my Mum and step dad (who used to be a very keen allotmenter *is that a word?*) came up to give me tips and advice.  After the initial "oh my god" they did start to point out the good bits.  Some beds had been dug and covered with tarpaulin stuff (Im sure this has an official term) and just needed a little TLC.  Shortly after they had been my sis and her partner (also keen veg growers) arrived and they too were very optimisitic and pointed out the good stuff.  We have no tools as yet which is a shame as today was such a beautiful day and perfect for spending the day digging etc
The husband has drawn plans of what we will do and what we will need.
I have realised this opens up a whole new avenue of shopping :)

Saturday 5th March

Today I met with the lady from the parish council who was going to show me my new allotment.  She did warn me prior that it was a bit overgrown but that didnt prepare me for how bad it was.  To say my heart sunk was an understatement.  It is very very overgrown and we think it has been used as a bin by the neighbour.  Two rusty wheel barrows are abandoned under the overgrowth.  It is going to be a lot of work.
Took the husband down and we both just stood and looked wondering what we had let ourselves in for.

About Me

United Kingdom
Welcome to my blog sharing the growth of my allotment. Myself, The husband and the three kids have all recently moved from the town we have always lived in, to a beautiful village 4 miles out of the town in County Durham. When we lived in town the idea of owning an allotment was a distant dream due to lack of allotments and huge waiting lists. When we moved myself and my daughter had gone for a walk, got lost, found some allotments, enquired and was offered one all in the space of a week. I know nothing about "allotmenting" so this will be a huge learning curve. I just keep repeating "it will be lovely when its done"
